The Niger Military Coup Situation
On the morning of 26 July 2023, soldiers loyal to General Abdourahamane Tiani carried out a Niger Military Coup by detained Niger’s president, Mohamed Bazoum. That night they declared a full military takeover by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP).
The Problem
The country was in a state of destabilisation, with high tensions, presenting a clear risk to our travellers already in the area, or those soon to be travelling. In addition, there was a high risk of Niger closing its airspace.
Our Solution
Our Operations team immediately implemented “scans” to identify individuals or Groups who were currently in Niger and connecting countries, or already on their way or due to travel shortly.
Upon identifying those impacted by the Niger Military Coup Political Crisis, our team triggered our emergency response process: and the following steps were taken:
- We immediately contacted the impacted travellers in person.
- We conducted synchronised communications to key client stakeholders including their security teams.
- We continuously liaised with travellers and client stakeholders throughout the crisis.
The Results
We identified a substantial number of travellers who would be impacted by the closure of the Niger airspace and displaced connections and flights. Our 24/7 Operational team contacted all travellers impacted, provided new itineraries, amended bookings, and supported traveller questions throughout the initial phase and ongoing crisis. Our Account Management team provided ongoing updates to our customers’ travel, risk and security teams.
We received resoundingly positive set of feedback from all travellers and organisations affected.
